How the Chemagic™ 360 Improves DNA Extraction for Molecular Testing at Envirocare Laboratory

Accurate molecular testing begins long before a PCR result is generated. The quality of every molecular analysis depends on one critical step: the extraction of high-quality DNA or RNA from the sample.

If nucleic acids are not efficiently recovered or contaminants remain in the extract, the reliability of downstream molecular testing can be affected. This is why modern laboratories continue to invest in advanced automated extraction technologies that improve consistency, reduce contamination risks, and support reliable PCR workflows.

At Envirocare Laboratory, we have strengthened our molecular testing capabilities through the implementation of the Chemagic™ 360 automated nucleic acid extraction system. As one of only a few private laboratories in South Africa operating this advanced platform, we are able to deliver highly consistent DNA and RNA extraction that supports food safety, veterinary diagnostics, environmental monitoring, water analysis, and research applications.

Why DNA Extraction Matters

DNA and RNA extraction is the foundation of every molecular testing workflow.

Before pathogens can be detected using PCR or other molecular techniques, their genetic material must first be isolated from the sample. The quality of this extraction directly influences the sensitivity, accuracy, and reproducibility of the final result.

Poor-quality extraction may lead to:

  • Reduced DNA or RNA recovery.
  • PCR inhibition caused by contaminants.
  • Greater variability between samples.
  • Increased repeat testing.
  • Reduced confidence when analysing low-level targets.

High-quality extraction helps laboratories produce reliable, reproducible results while improving workflow efficiency and turnaround times.

Manual vs Automated DNA Extraction

Traditional extraction methods often require multiple manual pipetting and liquid transfer steps. While effective when carefully performed, these workflows are labour-intensive and introduce greater opportunities for variability and contamination.

Automated extraction systems are designed to standardise this process.

Manual DNA Extraction Automated Chemagic™ 360 Extraction
Multiple manual handling steps Fully automated workflow
Greater opportunity for contamination Reduced sample handling
Operator-dependent consistency Standardised extraction process
Labour-intensive High-throughput capability
Variable DNA recovery Consistent DNA and RNA yields

Automation enables laboratories to process samples more efficiently while maintaining consistent quality across every extraction run.

What Is the Chemagic™ 360?

The Chemagic™ 360 is an automated nucleic acid extraction system developed to isolate high-quality DNA and RNA from a wide range of biological and environmental samples.

Rather than relying on repeated liquid transfers, the system uses patented magnetic bead technology to purify nucleic acids with minimal manual intervention.

This approach provides several important advantages:

  • High-purity DNA and RNA extraction.
  • Consistent recovery across different sample types.
  • Reduced risk of cross-contamination.
  • Reliable preparation for PCR and qPCR analysis.
  • Flexible workflows for routine and specialised testing.

The platform can process sample volumes ranging from approximately 10 µL to 10 mL and accommodate batch sizes from individual samples through to high-throughput processing.

How Magnetic Bead Extraction Works

The Chemagic™ 360 uses magnetic beads that selectively bind to DNA or RNA within the sample.

Instead of moving liquids between processing steps, magnetised rods transfer only the beads through a sequence of wash buffers before releasing purified nucleic acids into a clean solution.

This workflow typically includes:

  1. Binding DNA or RNA to magnetic beads.
  2. Magnetic separation of the bound nucleic acids.
  3. Multiple wash steps to remove proteins, inhibitors, and contaminants.
  4. Elution of purified DNA or RNA for downstream molecular analysis.

Because only the magnetic beads are transferred during processing, opportunities for cross-contamination are significantly reduced while extraction consistency is improved.

Supporting Reliable PCR Workflows

PCR analysis is only as reliable as the quality of the extracted nucleic acids.

By producing highly purified DNA and RNA with minimal inhibitors, the Chemagic™ 360 helps support:

  • Improved PCR sensitivity.
  • Greater confidence when detecting low concentrations of target organisms.
  • More reproducible results between samples.
  • Reduced repeat testing caused by poor extraction quality.

These improvements benefit laboratories performing molecular analyses where accuracy and consistency are essential.
